Prove me wrong!

It turns out that I’ve given authorization to apps and websites which I don’t remember why and when I gave to them. I don’t even remember what these do.

Now, I remember that I don’t need these apps and websites anymore. So, the action is to revoke the access.

If you ever wonder why I should revoke the access, here’s why: these apps and sites (that I’ve given my authorization) are using oAuth service so that you (and I) get an easy way to handle authorization process. Everyone loves easy and simple in authorization case, even in life. With oAuth, authorization will done in just two clicks. Whether with Google account, or Facebook account, or Yahoo! account, etc, etc.

But, if you’re willing to stop we and think, the fact is you know nothing about the people behind these apps and sites. It could be Anonymous troll or spammers who tried to collect our personal data.

And by give them authorization, we’re giving them access to our online accounts. Email, private documents, notes, photos, etc, etc. You will remember that we have signed up for hundreds of services and received confirmations from the services to our emails. Reset password confirmations, private conversations, chat logs, business emails, and more.

We can manage these authorizations within Google or Facebook settings. We just can’t remember where that settings located. And here comes the help. http://mypermissions.org/.

Revoke the access to the services you don’t need. Leave the access to the services you (think you) know and you (think you) need.

As a bonus, here’s a beautiful animation how your personal data collected and sold (without consent) by Michael Rigley.

As Unix users, we know there are so much paths in our system. From / to /home, etc, etc. And you knew these paths are assigned to particular files and folders. For example, /home is home users directories while /opt is the path for packages installed. But, how did it went like that? And why?

Rob Landley, who maintain Linux Firmware and an ex-maintainer of BusyBox, is trying to tell us the story behind these paths. Quoting from his explanation:

“.. when the system first boots, it has to come up enough to be able to mount the second disk on /usr, so don’t put things like the mount command /usr/bin or we’ll have a chicken and egg problem bringing the system up.”

Of course once the split existed, some people made other rules to justify it. Root was for the OS stuff you got from upstream and /usr was for your site-local files. Then / was for the stuff you got from AT&T and /usr was for the stuff that your distro like IBM AIX or Dec Ultrix or SGI Irix added to it, and /usr/local was for your specific installation’s files. Then somebody decided /usr/local wasn’t a good place to install new packages, so let’s add /opt! I’m still waiting for /opt/local to show up…

Of course given 30 years to fester, this split made some interesting distro-specific rules show up and go away again, such as “/tmp is cleared between reboots but /usr/tmp isn’t”. (Of course on Ubuntu /usr/tmp doesn’t exist and on Gentoo /usr/tmp is a symlink to /var/tmp which now has the “not cleared between reboots” rule. Yes all this predated tmpfs. It has to do with read-only root filesystems, /usr is always going to be read only in that case and /var is where your writable space is, / is mostly read only except for bits of /etc which they tried to move to /var but really symlinking /etc to /var/etc happens more often than not…)

Later on, there are some changes.

You can read complete Rob’s explanation here.

Kemarin, 25 Januari 2011 lalu, ketika berangkat ke kantor saya melihat Jalan Rasuna Said macet sekali.

UNIX is one of Dennis Ritchie‘s best inventions. And it is most used operating system for servers as well as workstations. As for servers, having a good system administrator is a must.

Actually, there are many roles of system administrator. From installation, monitor system performance, backup and restore, to setup security policies and so on and so forth. But, the most important thing to do for sysadmin is one thing. Problem solving. Period. Well, everyone knows it: solving problems is not easy. HA!

As newbie(s), being sysadmin is.. not quite fun, at all. It’s stressful. But, there are some tips you can use for your daily tasks.

And don’t forget! Make scripts!

Have fun!

Working on Linux environment is much easier and –a lot faster– when you know how to use command line. Even knowing basic operation of command line is more than enough if you know the combinations.

One of powerful commands in Linux is
find
. With this four character you find almost anything, from file located inside a directory to specific category of files or even rename files with particular condition. All can be done with
find
–and its combination of course.

The simplest command of find is:
find [path] [expression]

But, there are many expressions available for find, including
-daystart, -mindepth, -mtime, -iname, -inum
and so on.

Here is 15 practical find command examples and here’s 15 awesome more. It’s practical and so easy to follow.

If you want more information, find it here. Or type
man find
in your Terminal. Good luck!

I love WordPress from the very beginning.

Today, I found that they <del>made</del> generated a simple yet beautiful statistic for my personal blog. Looks like the stats uses Jetpack’s data and I registered Jetpack not so long ago. But, that’s fine.

It is simple, but I like it. I really am. It was private actually. But I wouldn’t mind if you care to know about it.

The moment I heard about it I went out to my browser and Google it. Found the link, I clicked and read what’s on the page to know what is it all about. Don’t understand much, I decided to sign-up and take a chance. It’s free. So, why not?

Sign-up process is easy, and very simple. Filling up my first and last name, email, picked up password, and a custom URL. Less than a minute I am registered. What’s next is connecting some third party services like Google, Google+, IMAP service, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and more. Psstt.. I did not connected my Facebook account to it.

Done with the process, the web directs me to my personal dashboard. Looking around many tabs, I found out that I can read and even reply my email with the service. A minute later something came up in my mind. If I can read my email and reply with this service, it must have the ability to read my personal data. The question is, will they read my personal data? Or even sell my personal data?

Let’s head on to the most-hated part of registration process, read Privacy Policy.

And look what I found.

“.. Any information shared through use of the Nimble Site or Nimble Services or Third Party Services accessed through Nimble Services will be shared with and stored by Nimble. This information includes any information shared through Third Party Services accessed through Nimble Services, including, but not limited to messages sent via Third Party Services, Third Party Applications Username or IDs, posts, location tags, photos, biographical information, etc. We may track and analyze non-identifying and aggregate usage and volume statistical information from you and provide such information to third parties. We may also use your Third Party Service or Application Username, IDs or handles and share it with our Partners and we may contact you based on this information. We may also track and analyze non-identifying and aggregate usage and volume statistical information from you and provide such information to third parties.”

and this

“Sale of information. In order to accommodate changes in our business, we may sell or buy portions of our company or other companies or assets, including the information collected through this Web site. … “

Okay. I need some help to understand those parts. Anyone?

PS: Yes, it’s Nimble.

Jika mau dipikir, ternyata lampu merah memberikan banyak keuntungan. Bagi kita. Pengendara.
